Long haired Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is the smallest of the dog breeds, characterized by an apple-shaped skull and a tail curved in a semicircle on the rump. Its coat is short or long, smooth and thin, and the breed comes in a wide range of colors, except merle. This dog is delicate and compact, with adults measuring between 15 and 23 cm and weighing between 1.5 and 3 kg.
Personality
The Chihuahua tends to bond closely with one or two people. He is a curious, lively, intelligent and deeply affectionate dog. However, without adequate socialization, he may be nervous and less inclined to socialize with strangers.
Origin
The Chihuahua is thought to derive from crossbreeding the Techichi breed with small dogs from Mexico, Arizona and Texas. In Toltec and Aztec culture, Techichi were pets of the wealthy and were cremated with the deceased to take on their sins, guide them through the underworld, and fight evil spirits.
Health
Like many small breeds, the Chihuahua can suffer from joint problems such as luxating patella and collapsed trachea. The shape of their heads also predisposes them to hydrocephalus and eye problems.
Exercise
The Chihuahua is adaptable to any type of exercise. He is alert, lively and courageous , and does not require long walks; half an hour a day of physical activity is enough.
Nutrition
Chihuahuas, like all toy dogs, have a rapid metabolism and must eat little and often . Specific food for small dogs is formulated with the right levels of nutrients and suitable sizes to stimulate chewing and improve digestion.
Grooming
Caring for the Chihuahua's coat is not very demanding. Just use a rubber comb/brush every now and then. For the long-haired variety once/twice a week. It is also important to brush their teeth daily, as this breed is prone to early tartar build-up.
Who is the Chihuahua suitable for?
The Chihuahua is ideal for people with a quiet lifestyle, elderly people, singles or couples without young children. Does not require much exercise, adapting well to apartment living with short daily walks. Its small size and affectionate character make it easy to handle and particularly suitable for those looking for a faithful and affectionate companion. However, he can be nervous around strangers and small children, preferring less chaotic environments.
